- About us
At AstraZeneca, we are transforming the future of healthcare by unlocking the power of what science can do – for people, society and the planet. The UK plays a key role within the global AstraZeneca network. It is home to colleagues from across the full life sciences value chain. Everything we do is driven by science to transform healthcare and patient outcomes, while playing a purpose-led role in wider society.
We have five sites situated across the UK, including the second largest manufacturing site in our network.
We are the leading biopharmaceutical company in the UK.
We work in ambitious, purpose-led partnerships to drive sustainable, evidence-based change and create shared value.
Economy
Alongside our direct impact in the UK, we also support a wider supply chain of businesses and public institutions across life sciences and other sectors:
Sustainability
We are taking bold action on climate because we recognise the connection between healthy people and a healthy planet. Since 2015, we have achieved a 59.3% reduction in global Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions. Across the UK, in partnership with Forestry England, Borders Forest Trust and One Tree Planted, over one million trees will be grown and sustained by the end of 2025 through our AZ Forest programme.
Purpose-led partnerships
Our purpose is to push the boundaries of science to deliver lifechanging medicines. We can’t do this alone. The life sciences sector is an ecosystem. Pharmaceutical companies, universities, health charities, the NHS and patients themselves all work together to help increase our understanding of effective treatment. Spending by private companies can help support publicly funded research, while public research in turn catalyses new private investment. On average, every £1 of public R&D is associated with an additional £2 of private R&D spend.
Training the next generation
From inspiring school children to employing apprentices, graduates and postdoctoral researchers, we work at all levels to support people entering the industry. We support more than 500 early career scientists, including over 275 apprenticeships, 60 industrial placements, and 200 PhD positions in the UK.
