Education Liaison

Promoting Science and Education in the Community

Through producing new medicines, AstraZeneca - one of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies - improves human health and enhances people's lives.

As part of our commitment as a global business to high standards of social responsibility, we place great importance on the good relationships with our local communities around the world.

We believe in promoting the value of science in the community and in particular amongst young people. We support science at all levels with a range of programmes - both national and local - aimed at encouraging the scientists of the future.  Around 178 employee volunteers - Science Engineering Ambassadors (SEAS) - work with local primary and secondary schools to promote and support science education.

AstraZeneca sponsors the CREativity in Science and Technology (CREST) AWARDS for the BA (British Association for the Advancement of Science) encouraging project work, problem solving and communication skills in students aged 11-19. Over 20,000 students a year take part in the BA CREST across the UK, many of whom attend regional celebrations, the best projects compete in the national BA CREST Science Fair.

There is also the AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust, an independent charity, with a total trust fund of  £20 million, supporting a programme of projects designed to help build the knowledge, skills and understanding required to lead and teach science effectively and confidently in primary schools.  AstraZeneca, the AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust and The Brightside Trust are collaborating on a particular project, called 'Scientists in Schools', to develop training for Science and Engineering Ambassadors (SEAS) and to make AstraZeneca's scientific expertise available on-line to schools.  AstraZeneca also supports 'Project Enthuse', a partnership between private, public and charitable sectors, offering professional development training to science teachers.
