Clinical trials

We are committed to meeting patient needs through innovative medicines and clinical excellence. AstraZeneca conducts clinical trials to help determine the safety and efficacy of a new medicine.

Our UK Clinical Operations team forms part of the UK Medical & Regulatory Affairs department, and consists of scientists and specialist administrative staff responsible for conducting clinical trials on behalf of AstraZeneca’s Global Clinical Organisation (R&D) as well as later phase research on behalf of the Global Sales and Marketing Organisation.

The Clinical Operations team initiates and delivers clinical trials in the UK, from First Time in Man, through Phase I to IV encompassing all six of the AstraZeneca key therapeutic areas. Working with physicians in both primary and secondary care, Clinical Operations generates clinical data to determine the efficacy & safety of AstraZeneca products, as well as conducting non interventional research, for example to evaluate current clinical practice and outcomes for patients. In line with our Group Corporate Responsibility Policy on transparency, we are committed to open communication of information on AstraZeneca’s clinical trials. We provide details of new and ongoing clinical trials sponsored by AstraZeneca via and other accessible websites and through publications in appropriate scientific journals and at scientific meetings.

All our research is conducted in accordance with all relevant local, national and international legislation, regulations and guidelines, as required by our Code of Conduct.

In addition, our commitment to delivering the highest standards is broadened and strengthened by the guiding principles outlined in our Bioethics Policy. Where appropriate, these high-level principles are supported by detailed standards that are communicated to employees in the relevant areas to ensure we continue to live up to our commitment.
