Children attending Hurdsfield Community Primary School are now
greeted by a newly-planted hornbeam tree, donated by pharmaceutical company
AstraZeneca to celebrate the success of a waste recycling scheme at its
Macclesfield manufacturing site. The tree planting ceremony was carried out on Monday, 8 April,
by AstraZeneca employees involved in the scheme, accompanied by UK
Manufacturing Sites Manager David Gartside and watched by Hurdsfield's
headteacher Tony Cumberbatch, representatives of the school's staff and pupils.
"We are carrying out a number of improvements to the school
grounds this year, including the installation of new play equipment, and the
planting of this tree close to the entrance has been a most welcome addition,"
said Mr. Cumberbatch. "Waste recycling helps the environment as well as adding value
to our business and this donation provides visible evidence within the local
community of our employees' achievements," said Mr. Gartside. The recycling scheme involves careful collection and segregation
of waste paper, cardboard, cartons and plastic. It was devised and introduced
by several members of the AstraZeneca 'Diprivan' (an intravenous anaesthetic)
packaging department as part of a 'continuous improvement' exercise.
