"What appealed to me about doing an AstraZeneca Apprenticeship was the great reputation the company has and the opportunity to work with such a large company"
I came across the AstraZeneca Apprenticeship scheme at a careers convention at Macclesfield Town Hall. At that stage, I was 16 years old and had passed all nine of my GCSEs at high grades.
I took an application form and sent it off shortly after I received a number of interviews in different laboratory sections at AstraZeneca.
What appealed to me about doing an AstraZeneca Apprenticeship was the great reputation the company had and the opportunity to work with such a large company. Also the chance to gain practical working skills in the world of work, academic qualifications and develop myself as a person.
Before starting there was an induction week where I was able to meet people who would be following the same training programme.
The function of the department I work for is to assess the ability to test compounds for there mutagenic potential in a variety of systems in bacterial and mammalian cells in culture and in bone marrow in vivo.
My role is to provide technical assistance for bacterial studies performed in Genetic toxicology on Discovery and Development compounds.
My key accountabilities include; performing all practical techniques and procedures associated with the conduct of bacterial studies in accordance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP).
During my 18 months so far I have attended many training courses on and off-the-job. This gives me a chance to increase my knowledge and further my development.
Also recently the training company Total People has nominated me for the Apprentice of the year. I enjoy working in a sociable environment and been able to work with others especially older people.
The most memorable part of my Apprenticeship was the two Outward-Bound residential trips to the Lake District. This was both physically and mentally challenging.
Overall I feel that AstraZeneca has provided me with every opportunity to develop both professionally and personally.
