"The AstraZeneca Apprenticeship Programme was very attractive compared to other companies in the area, as there was more opportunity to develop myself in the role"
I joined AstraZeneca at the age of 16 after finishing my GCSEs. I then started a 4 year engineering apprenticeship, which involved one day release a week at college to complete my ONC and HNC. I also completed my NVQ level 2 and 3, which are work based, qualifications.
Before joining AstraZeneca I went through a series of tests and interviews to see if I was suitable for the role.
The AstraZeneca Apprenticeship Programme was very attractive compared to other companies in the area, as there was more opportunity to develop myself in the role. The interviews were also very professional and the Apprentice Manager seemed very friendly.
My department now maintains one of the biggest assets at Alderley Park, the compound management stores. The store supplies thousands of chemicals for our scientists all over the world. The job can be so varied from day-to-day.
One day I could be fixing a water leak in a laboratory and the next day I could be calibrating sensors on HVAC system. Once I have a few years experience under my belt there are a number of options. I could take to further my career whether it be in projects or robotics departments. I also enjoy fixing equipment and get good satisfaction from seeing machinery back in working order, although I sometime dislike all the paper work.
