"My main reason for joining AstraZeneca and the Apprenticeship scheme was the opportunity to work with equipment and machinery while still allowing me to further my education"
Before starting at AstraZeneca, I attended Tytherington County High School in Macclesfield, and gained 11 A-C grades in my GCSEs. At the age of 16, I applied for the AstraZeneca Engineering Apprenticeship.
The first year of the Apprenticeship was based off site at a training centre learning basic engineering skills. The next three years, I worked and trained on-the-job alongside technicians as part of a team in various departments including manufacturing plants, labs, warehouses, and packing facilities.
During this time I also carried out an NVQ2 and 3 in Engineering Maintenance and a National & Higher National Certificate in Mechatronics at Stockport College.
I then worked for five years as an Engineering Technician within the Bulk Drug Department putting all the skills I learnt during the Apprenticeship to good use, whilst at the same time learning lots more!
At that time I was also selected by AstraZeneca to study part-time for a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechatronics at Manchester Metropolitan University, where I gained a First Class Honours.
My current role is as a Plant Engineer, having the engineering responsibility over a number of packing lines. I manage a team of Engineering Technicians who repair breakdowns, carry out testing & calibrations and preventative maintenance. Another important part of my role is ensuring the area complies with all health & safety legislation. I am currently working towards gaining Chartered Engineer status with the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.
I enjoy the challenge of not knowing what my day will bring and being able to adapt my skills and knowledge to solve problems as they occur.
