Alex - Catering apprentice - AstraZeneca apprenticeships

"I think that AstraZeneca has one of the best apprentice development programmes. There are loads of courses to go on, for example, communication courses and a 7-day outward-bound course"

At school I studied (and passed!) Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Business Studies, I.C.T, Religious Studies and Food Technology.  I had a choice to stay on at school and study for my A-Levels or apply for an apprentice place with AstraZeneca.

I applied for the position as an apprentice chef via the AstraZeneca careers website. After about 2 weeks I received an email inviting me for an interview. At the interview I met with my future manager and human resources - I was asked difficult questions and found it a bit nerve racking but I received an email after the interview saying I had been successful!

My roles in the kitchen are a commis chef, which is a trainee chef role.  Im working on all sections in the kitchen; I could be working on main counter one day and then be working on the pastry section the next.

The day-to-day experience in the kitchen is never boring. I start the day by preparing meals at lunch or for an evening function.  Once lunchtime comes then its all about customer service and this is the most stressful part of the day. You have to work as fast as possible to the highest standard. Then you have a break!

I think that AstraZeneca has one of the best apprentice development programmes. There are loads of courses to go on, for example, communication courses and a 7-day outward-bound course. I am currently studying NVQ 2 &3 in catering.
