For the third consecutive year, AstraZeneca has been named a “top employer” in Science magazine’s ranking of the world’s most respected biopharmaceutical employers.

The ranking, determined from a survey conducted by an independent research firm commissioned by the business office of the journal, Science, appears in a special supplement in the 26 November issue.   This year, AstraZeneca ranked fifth overall, improving on the previous year's ranking of sixth.

According to Martin Nicklasson, Executive Vice President, Global Drug Development, AstraZeneca, “Research is at the very heart of everything we do within AstraZeneca, and we are pleased that the readers of Science magazine continue to recognize our commitment to maintaining a culture where our employees feel valued and appreciated.“

Adds Jan Lundberg, Executive Vice President, Discovery Research, AstraZeneca,  “We are honoured that AstraZeneca, once again, has been named a top employer by Science.  It serves as welcome external recognition of the efforts we take to make AstraZeneca a great place to do innovative science that benefits patients around the globe. “

Similar to a 2003 Science ranking of biopharma employers, the 2004 survey sought to identify the companies with the best reputations as employers, based on 1162 survey responses from Science readers. This year, findings are separated for scientists employed in the biotech and pharmaceutical industries (n=698) and for academics and consultants to the biotech and pharmaceutical industries (n=464).

Survey responses were analysed by Senn-Delany Culture Diagnostics and Measurement, which used a mathematical process to assign a unique score to rate the employer reputation of some 317 companies, taking into account 42 specific characteristics or attributes in seven categories. Each company was rated, for example, based on whether employees are treated with respect, whether work-culture values are aligned with personal values, and other factors.
