Macclesfield, in the north-west of England, is our second largest manufacturing site and our European centre for packing.
Nearly 2,000 people are employed at our Macclesfield site, a third of whom work in the manufacturing, packing and distributing of our medicines to 130 global markets.
Effective manufacturing processes are vitally important to our work, so we’ve introduced new techniques at Macclesfield which have increased efficiency significantly.
The production line at Macclesfield for Zoladex, used to treat hormone-sensitive cancers of the prostate and breast, is the only one of its kind globally, requiring a complex aseptic technique to ensure the sterility of the drug.
In addition to manufacturing and supply, the Macclesfield site is home to our IT function, as well as a number of important Pharmaceutical Development facilities. This includes the £63m Pharmaceutical Development laboratory building which supports the development of new medicines. The multi-disciplinary teams of scientists and specialists based here are responsible for devising efficient, practical chemical routes and processes to deliver quantities of candidate drugs to support all development work, including early clinical trials.
Our work at Macclesfield extends beyond the site. We are committed to supporting the local community through donations to local charities and employee volunteering activities in schools and colleges to support science education.
